How To Choose the Right Rug For Your Home

Rugs are arguably one of the most important aspects of curating your home. They anchor your room and define your space all while determining the overall style of your home.

Even more importantly, if you’re going for longevity, a rug can certainly be an investment piece, making it even more important to choose the right one the first time around. How can you be sure that you’ve found the perfect match to complement your space? Keep reading for a few helpful tips from our team at Kruger House.

From determining the right size to selecting the right material and style, we've got you covered. With our tips and tricks, you'll be able to create a comfortable, stylish, and inviting space in your home in no time. So, let's get started!

Determining the Right Size for Your Space

Around here, we’re pretty big believers that bigger is better when it comes to choosing a rug for your home. Why? A rug that is too small for the space will make the room feel disjointed and incomplete. That said, we know you paid a LOT for your floors and we don’t want them fully covered up!

LIVING ROOM

You’re going to have to get out your measuring tape for this next part.

Ready? Start by measuring your living room.

Our general rule of thumb is to choose a rug that is large enough to fit all of the furniture within its borders. For example, in a living room, the rug should be large enough to fit the sofa, chairs, and coffee table with a few inches (close to 6”)  to spare on each side. In our living rooms, we rarely go below an 8x10. Start by testing that size and mapping it out with painter's tape to see how it will *really* look in your space. We promise, it’s a lifesaver and will save you on returns, too!

BEDROOMS

In a bedroom, the rug should extend beyond the sides and foot of the bed to create a cohesive look. Typically, we recommend an 8x10 rug for a queen-sized bed and a 9x12 rug for a king-sized bed. That said, these are simply guidelines and you can easily rotate between the two sizes to still find a rug that works well in your space.

DINING ROOM

If you don’t have messy eaters and are considering adding a rug to your dining space, we recommend choosing a rug that’s big enough to have all of our chair or bench legs on it, with a few extra inches on the sides. In most cases, that means an 8x10.

And don't forget about the shape of the rug - rectangular or square rugs tend to work best in most spaces, but round or oval rugs can be a great way to add visual interest in certain areas, and especially with round dining tables.

Choosing the Right Material for Your Rug

Materials matter. When it comes to picking out your Kruger House rug, you’ll want to consider how it looks, feels, and holds up based on what it’s made out of.

Wool Rugs

We love wool rugs for rooms that need a touch of warmth. They have a soft feel and are great additions to bedrooms, basements, media rooms, and more. Wool rugs can be slightly more difficult to clean, so we recommend getting them professionally cleaned outside of dabbing up small stains.

Viscose Rugs

Viscose and silk rugs are beautiful, and have a slight sheen to them. Of the four options, they tend to be a bit harder to clean, so we recommend avoiding them for higher-traffic areas or areas with pets. These rugs would be beautiful in guest bedrooms, an office, or a formal living room.

Polypropylene Rugs

Polypropylene, Polyester, and P.E.T. rugs are great for your highest-traffic areas, like living rooms, entryways, or mudrooms. These rugs are much easier to clean and are easily at the top of our list for durability.

Jute Rugs

Love a natural look? Jute rugs might be the perfect fit. It’s a stunning natural texture that ensures each rug is unique with different colors moving throughout the piece. Jute can typically also be used inside AND outside, so it’s great for patios and porches.

Selecting the Right Style for Your Decor

Now comes the fun part, style! Your rug will be a central part of your decor, so you'll want to make sure it complements the style and aesthetic of your space. For us, the style includes the color, texture, pattern, and overall look of the rug in your space.

Your rug should add to your space, not distract from it. That means it should play into the textures, colors, and patterns you already have going on.

  • If your style is traditional, you may want to opt for a rug with a classic pattern or oriental feel..

  • If your style is modern, try sticking to geometric shapes or patterns.

  • If you lean more towards minimalism, seek out a rug with minimal patterns that amplify your color palette.

  • For those with a more eclectic or bohemian style, a colorful, patterned rug can act as a statement piece and tie together various elements of the room.

  • And if you’re a fan of a natural look, a natural-fiber rug, like a jute or sisal material, can also bring an organic, earthy feel to a space.

If you're unsure of your style, take a look around your home or your Pinterest board and pay attention to the pieces you're drawn to. Do you like clean lines and minimalism? Or are you drawn to bold colors and patterns? Use these clues to help inform your rug selection.
